7 Affordable DIY Projects To Spruce Up Your Home in 2021

A new year is the perfect opportunity to make positive changes in your life. While hitting 10,000 steps and drinking more water are great resolutions, taking on a home project or two is our favorite way at Red Door Homes to kick off the new year.

Home renovations aren’t always accompanied by a HGTV crew, but they can be just as fun and inspired! There are so many simple, affordable projects you can do yourself to make your home look brand new!

  1. Hide your cords

One of the easiest ways to give your home a fresh look is to tidy up any clutter. For many of us, desks and workspaces can become overwhelmed with computer cords and chargers that we use throughout the work day. Take a few moments to collect any stray cords and get them organized. By adding a cable box under your desk or cord concealers close to the wall your room will be refreshed in minutes.

  1. Try peel and stick wallpaper

Making changes to a wall is one of the most obvious ways to change a room’s environment. It’s also a lot of work! Peel and stick wallpaper takes away the stress of planning a paint project or committing to a traditional wallpaper. With a variety of fun patterns, peel and stick wallpaper allows you to try something new without having to have it up for years — if you don’t like it, it’s an easy removal process! This is a great way to get creative with the whole family, whether you’re redoing the kids’ playroom for the fourth time or spicing up the bathroom!

  1. Have fun with house numbers

Boring house numbers? That’s so last year. Make your home address a memorable one by changing out your old house numbers with new, creative ones. From bold, modern options to classic, elegant arrangements, there are house numbers that fit every personality. Choose the ones that fit your family the best!

  1. Add mirrors to your doors

No matter what house you’re living in, it’s a simple fact that mirrors add space and light to whatever room they’re in. Placing a mirror, whether full-length or a more creative shape, to the front of the closet, cabinet, and room doors add a subtle new change that makes rooms look bigger, fast! A home project that can be done on a weeknight? That’s what we like to hear!

  1. Customize your mailbox

The front of your home is the first impression of where your family lives, so you might as well make it a good one! Sprucing your mailbox up can be a fun family project that takes a generally generic element of your home and turns it into something new! Whether you add a layer of paint (complete with the kids’ handprints!), decals, or a new post, your mailbox upgrade will be the talk of the neighborhood!

  1. Hang twinkle lights

Some rooms just need a little...twinkle! Do you find yourself needing more light but you don’t want to flip the light switch? Bring in the twinkle lights. They can go anywhere! Add them to your bathroom for a bubble bath experience that feels like a spa. Place them in your pantry to help you find that late night snack. Hang them in the playroom and watch your kids spend every evening there (giving the grown ups a little breather). Twinkle lights are a classic DIY project for a reason — they’re the best!

  1. Organize your pantry

If you want your kitchen to look like it’s straight out of a Target catalog, one of the first things you can do is organize all the food items in your kitchen. Instead of keeping your baking supplies and dry goods in those clunky paper bags, transfer them to mason jars. Keep all the after school snacks in a separate organizer. Get a fruit basket. This allows your pantry to spill out onto the counter (a natural occurrence no matter how hard we try) and still look like you’ve got your life together. Chip and Joanna would be proud!
